Dogfight is a good, solid little piece of animation. The story occurs shortly after the Battle of Endor when the Alliance is engaged with Imperial forces in isolated skirmishes. This is one of them.
The animation is good, though not without flaws. The explosions seem to be out of the context of the rest of the film and strangely static. One big explosion, toward the end, is fairly unbelievable and lacks the pinache of the rest of the animation. The opening screen crawl seemed oddly distorted and, by the way folks, I take off for spelling. See if you can spot the error in the opening sentence. Isn't there a spellcheck for screen crawls?
I also thought the film missed an opportunity by making all of the pilots humans, though I do credit them for having women in the mix. It would be fun to see a Rodian, a Twi'lek, a Gran, or some other non-human race in the mix sometime. I mean, I get to see humans everyday. Part of the fun of Star Wars is hobnobbing with enigmatic and bizarre aliens.
The dialogue is okay, but when one of the pilots cried out, "Die, Imperial dogs!" in a Russian accent I wasn't sure whether to groan or laugh. You can decide for yourself.
Dogfight moves along at a good clip. It doesn't have much of a plot, but I suppose it doesn't need one. Rebel meets Imperial. Rebel destroys Imperial. Rebel goes home. Not really creative, but it's straightforward.
